WHEN:

First (For those who love a good CHALLENGE!):

"OT USA Border-to-Border" – The Third Saturday In July Each Year and

Second:

"OT Arizona" – The Third Saturday in September Each Year.

WHAT:

ON-TARGET is a unique Varsity Scout activity where a Varsity Team takes a large signal mirror to the top of a mountain that you choose and attempts to capture beams of sunlight with your “Sun-Gun” and flash them to other Varsity teams located on other mountains around the area. First, In July, we participate with teams from all over the Western US to create a network of teams on mountains from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. Then, in September, we participate with teams from all around AZ to build a network throughout Arizona. Your team can do either, or both.

HOW:

By your Varsity team getting together with other teams in your district to form a local network of mirror signal (heliograph) stations on top of a bunch of mountains.  This network will be linked together with other district networks through-out the council to form a statewide network in ever widening circles to illuminate the whole area with the light of Varsity Scouting.  We will also attempt to create a ham radio and/or cell phone network to assist with communications.

Each Team should begin now to plan their participation by taking the following steps:

1) Mark your calendar for the date or dates they want to participate in Operation On Target.

2) Making and learning to use signal mirrors (See OT Activity chapter in new Varsity Scout Guidebook)

3) Find and recruit a HAM Radio Operator or get someone in you unit licensed. Cell phones work too!

4) Choose your peak! (And a second and third choice – Just pick a high spot anywhere you like. Just be sure that you can get there and that you can see something after you do.)

5) Sign Up!!!  (See the link on this page!)

NOTE:

MOUNTAIN ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE COORDINATED BY THE DISTRICT AND COUNCIL  "ON-TARGET" COMMITTEES ON THE BASIS OF FIRST- COME, FIRST-ASSIGNED, SO GET YOUR CHOICES IN EARLY!  You will be notified as soon as possible which of your three choices you have been assigned, then a week or so before the activity, each team will receive a packet with locations of other teams, radio frequencies and call letters, and phone numbers, etc, etc.

WHY:

“OPERATION ON-TARGET” has come to symbolize our efforts in Varsity Scouting to be ON-TARGET with our program as we try to encourage each other to seek greater heights in our lives; to let our light and the light of SCOUTING shine forth through our example to others and to set, work for and achieve lofty personal and team goals.

LETS ALL GET "ON-TARGET" THIS YEAR AND MAKE IT THE BEST AND BIGGEST AND MOST FUN AND MOST EXCITING ACTIVITY WE HAVE ALL YEAR!!!
